Environmental Mycotoxin Testing: What Dust and Material Results Can—and Cannot—Tell You

Environmental mycotoxin testing can document selected target compounds in a collected dust, surface or building-material sample. The result is most useful when it is interpreted with the sample location, water-damage history, visible mold, moisture conditions and purpose of the investigation.

What Is Environmental Mycotoxin Testing?

Mycotoxins are substances that certain fungi are capable of producing under particular environmental and growth conditions. Environmental mycotoxin testing analyzes a selected environmental sample for a defined panel of target compounds.

Depending on the laboratory method and project objective, an environmental sample may consist of settled dust, a surface sample or a piece of visibly moldy or water-damaged building material. The exact target compounds, sample matrix, reporting limits and analytical method should be confirmed before the sample is collected.

Environmental mycotoxin testing is not a substitute for inspecting a building. Moisture, leaks, visible mold, damaged materials, odors, dust reservoirs and HVAC conditions may provide information that a laboratory result alone cannot establish.

Angstrom performs environmental inspection and sampling only. We do not collect or interpret urine, blood or other clinical specimens.

The sample matrix changes the question

Dust, Surface and Building-Material Samples

Environmental mycotoxin results should not be treated as interchangeable when the samples came from different materials, rooms or collection strategies.

Dust can contain material deposited over time. Results may reflect current conditions, historical conditions or a combination of both, depending on cleaning, occupancy, furnishings and the collection area.

Surface Samples

A surface sample is tied to a specific location or deposit. It can help characterize the selected area but does not automatically describe unsampled rooms, cavities or building systems.

Bulk Materials

Pieces of visibly moldy or water-damaged drywall, insulation, ceiling material or other building products can provide source-focused information about the particular material submitted to the laboratory.

Dust age matters.

A result from carpeting, upholstered furniture, older horizontal surfaces or another long-term reservoir may represent accumulated historical deposition rather than only conditions present on the day of sampling. Cleaning history and the exact collection area should therefore be documented.

Capability is not the same as demonstrated production

Detecting Mold Does Not Automatically Prove Mycotoxin Production

Some molds are toxigenic, meaning that they are capable of producing mycotoxins. NIOSH notes that molds capable of producing mycotoxins should be addressed as indoor mold and moisture problems rather than treated as a separate category of “toxic mold.”

Identifying a fungal genus or species does not by itself prove that a particular mycotoxin was produced in the sampled material. Toxin production depends on the organism, substrate, moisture, temperature, growth conditions and other environmental factors.

The reverse is also important: detecting a selected mycotoxin in a dust or material sample does not determine the full location or extent of mold growth throughout the property. The source still has to be evaluated through inspection, moisture assessment and building history.

Indicates that a target compound was detected in the selected sample using the laboratory's analytical method and reporting criteria.

Evaluates moisture, leaks, damaged materials, visible growth, odors, dust reservoirs and possible source areas that laboratory data cannot establish on their own.

Environmental Mycotoxin Analysis

Evaluates selected target compounds in a defined environmental sample.

  • May use dust, surface or material samples
  • Uses a laboratory-specific target panel

  • Does not measure every possible fungal metabolite

ERMI or HERTSMI-2

DNA-based dust testing used to identify and quantify selected fungal species.

  • Measures fungal DNA, not mycotoxins
  • Usually uses accumulated settled dust
  • Influenced by cleaning and dust age
  • Should be interpreted with the building inspection

Mold Air Sampling

Evaluates airborne fungal spores at selected indoor and outdoor locations.

  • Represents a relatively short sampling period
  • Influenced by ventilation and occupant activity
  • Useful for selected current airborne conditions
  • May not detect concealed growth

Surface or Bulk Mold Testing

Evaluates suspected growth or damaged material at a specific location.

  • Source-focused sample
  • Can help confirm that growth is fungal
  • Can characterize selected fungal structures or groups
  • Does not establish building-wide exposure

Ordering every available mold test usually does not improve the investigation.

The sampling approach should be selected to answer a defined environmental question. A building with visible water damage may require source inspection and moisture correction more urgently than additional laboratory panels.

  • Whether a suspect dust or material reservoir warrants further review
  • Findings that can be combined with moisture and mold observations
  • A documented environmental record for the sampled conditions

A Result Does Not Automatically Establish

  • The condition of every room, wall cavity or HVAC component
  • The exact source of every detected compound
  • Whether the finding reflects only current conditions
  • A person's exposure dose or route of exposure
  • Medical diagnosis or individual health causation
  • A universal building pass/fail determination

There is no single laboratory number that replaces the building investigation.

EPA states that there are no federal standards or threshold values for airborne mold contaminants. Environmental mycotoxin results likewise require method-specific and building-specific interpretation rather than being treated as a universal federal clearance value.

Sampling limitations matter

Why One Dust Sample Cannot Describe an Entire Property

A dust sample represents the material actually collected from a defined area. Results can change depending on which rooms were sampled, the size of the collection area, the age and amount of dust, carpeting or furnishings, prior cleaning and the history of mold or water damage.

Combining dust from many rooms may provide a broad composite result, but it can also make it harder to determine which room or source contributed a detected compound. Room-specific samples provide more spatial information but increase laboratory cost and still represent only the selected locations.

Concealed wall cavities, flooring systems, ceilings and inaccessible HVAC components may differ from the accessible surfaces that were sampled. A non-detect result from one collected sample does not prove that an unsampled concealed source is absent.

Moisture remains the central building issue

Inspection and Moisture Assessment Still Come First

Both EPA and NIOSH emphasize the importance of identifying dampness, visible mold, mold odors and moisture sources. NIOSH states that finding and correcting dampness is more effective for preventing building-related mold problems than relying on routine air sampling.

For an environmental mycotoxin investigation, this means the laboratory data should be connected to the physical building: where water entered, which materials remained wet, whether mold growth is visible, whether reservoirs remain, and whether the moisture source has actually been corrected.

Roof leaks, plumbing failures, flooding, condensation and chronic humidity can create conditions that support fungal growth.

Damaged Material

Drywall, insulation, flooring, wood, ceiling materials and contents should be evaluated for visible damage, staining, deterioration and mold growth.

Reservoirs

Carpeting, furnishings, horizontal surfaces and HVAC components can hold accumulated dust that may represent historical as well as current conditions.

What does an environmental mycotoxin test measure?

It measures selected target compounds in the specific dust, surface or material sample submitted to the laboratory. The analyte panel and reporting limits depend on the laboratory method.

Does detecting Stachybotrys prove that mycotoxins are present?

No. A mold species may be capable of producing mycotoxins, but fungal identification alone does not demonstrate that a specific toxin was produced in the sampled material.

Does detecting a mycotoxin prove there is active mold growth today?

Not necessarily. Dust and material reservoirs can reflect historical conditions. The result should be reviewed with current moisture, visible mold, material condition, cleaning history and sample location.

Is mycotoxin testing the same as ERMI?

No. ERMI is based on fungal DNA in collected dust. Environmental mycotoxin testing analyzes selected chemical compounds. The two methods answer different questions.

Can one composite dust sample tell me which room is the source?

Usually not. A composite can show what was detected in the combined collected dust, but combining multiple rooms reduces the ability to determine which individual location contributed the finding.

Is there a federal pass/fail level for environmental mycotoxin dust?

There is no universal EPA building clearance value used to convert an environmental mycotoxin dust result into a simple federal pass/fail decision. Results should be interpreted according to the method, sample matrix, collection area and building conditions.

Can environmental mycotoxin testing diagnose illness?

No. Environmental testing documents selected building conditions and laboratory findings. It does not diagnose illness, establish individual exposure dose or determine medical causation.

Should visible mold always be tested for mycotoxins?

No. EPA and NIOSH emphasize identifying and correcting moisture and visible mold conditions. Specialized mycotoxin testing is most useful when it addresses a defined environmental or documentation question.
